Event Details:
Air pollution is the leading environmental health risk worldwide, causing 8.1 million deaths in 2021, including over 700,000 children under five. Despite its severity, less than 1% of international development funding between 2015 and 2021 addressed outdoor air pollution, with most funds allocated to only a few countries. This highlights an urgent need for increased action and investment.
On November 26, 2019, the UN General Assembly designated September 7 as the “International Day of Clean Air for blue skies” to raise awareness and promote actions to improve air quality.
The Asia Pacific Commemoration of the Fifth International Day of Clean Air for blue skies will take place on September 5-6, 2024, under the theme “Invest in #CleanAirNow.” This event will highlight the economic, environmental, and health benefits of clean air, aiming to engage governments, industries, corporations, financial institutions, international organizations, and civil society.
Despite the significant harm air pollution causes, efforts to combat it are severely underfunded. Investment, robust policies, legislation, and climate action are critically needed to address this issue.
Investing in clean air can prevent far greater economic, environmental, and health costs in the future.
